He is responding, though" ಎಂದು ಅಡ್ಡ ಗೋಡೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ದೀಪವಿಟ್ಟರು.

We should take a call" ಎಂದ.

I want to give him a proper send-off" ಹೇಳಿದ ರಾಘವ.

Important...not close. Close.. but not close enough.

You can  assist only those who want your assistance.

"Thank You Sir. Sorry for the inconvenience"

He was clearly feeling nostalgic that evening.

"Very Good" ಮತ್ತೆ ಮೌನ.

I am Kishore's Father....

"You know Shruthi... It's almost family heirloom.

Two Dates....and a Dud

                    Two Dates....and a Dud

"I'm leaving just now....wish me luck!" Vishnu texted her. It mattered to him that Sneha knew he was out to meet a girl. If anybody helped him understand girls better, it was her. It had been a nightmare - sifting through the dozens of profiles his parents seemed to source out of thin air. And after a point in time, he was losing interest - every girl started looking the same.

"Let your search end today! I want to see you settled  :) "  came the reply. Vishnu smiled and started.

                                                                 ***************

"She is late....again..." Vishnu texted Sneha. She was never on time and this was their fourth meeting. Vishnu had liked the slowness of courting this girl. He had met her once a week over the last month and finally, in their last meeting - he felt the scales tilting from neutral to positive. Their dialogue in the dark seemed to be seeing the light of day.  "I think it's finally happening"  he had texted Sneha right after he left the restaurant after his previous date with the girl.

Of course, he didn't like that the girl always turned up late - and that she always had an excuse for that.
"It's okay...girls can be late sometimes" Sneha replied.
"But you never are...."
"That's...just me ;)"  Vishnu's heart skipped a beat whenever he saw that wink. He could never place Sneha in his mental jigsaw. She was definitely a friend. A confidante. A guide at times. And then there were moments like these...when his heart hinted she could be something more. And then the reality that she was being all these....because she was never exactly anyone of these.
"Yeah..that's you ;)" Vishnu  texted, casting the complexity aside.
"Focus on your date dude!" She was good at this, Vishnu thought.

"Sorry...I'm late again" she said, as they settled down at the Cafe. "That's just the fourth time out of four times" was what Vishnu had in mind. "It's okay...some anticipation is a good start" was what he said.

Over three meetings, patterns had definitely set in. There was lots of lighthearted conversation interspersed with serious discussions around "this is me...is that okay?" sprinkled with "this is me...you have no choice." Thankfully, what held things together, was a healthy dose of "I like this..we'll be okay." However, the last part was more a tacit self-assurance than open admission. Neither of them had let their guard down with a compliment yet - lest the other one thought it was a done deal.

"Can I say she is looking pretty?" Vishnu texted Sneha, his phone under the table.
"Give it a go...fourth meeting right.."

"You are looking pretty" Vishnu ventured, trying to mix caution with confidence and hoping it sounded just right.
"Thank You!" she said coolly. "And what do I say? That you look dashing?"she asked, teasingly. Vishnu felt himself going slightly red behind the ears. It was his way of blushing.

"She called me dashing!" he texted Sneha excitedly, as he rode back home in a cab.
"That you are ;)" Vishnu consciously ignored the wink. Times were changing.
"I think...we are done here :) Get ready to get invited!"
" :) Cheers!"

                                                                     **************
"Hey Vishnu....I thought a lot about this. It's been nice meeting you..and I had a really good time. But I don't think we should take this forward." she had texted early morning - knowing full well that Vishnu wouldn't be awake till around nine on a weekend.

Vishnu sighed. It was back to square one.

                                                                    ***************

" You can ask me anything. Let's not hold back because it's our first meeting" Sneha said to the guy sitting across the table. Hers was a first impression approach. Either you liked the person or you didn't. There was no meandering and beating around the bush. She believed that if she said Yes, she would hold onto her side of  the bargain, no matter what. And this time, she really wanted to.

"Some guys like if your are direct...some guys prefer if you are a little shy..." Vishnu had suggested when she called him for advice the previous evening.
"Are the stakes that high, this time?" he asked, sensing Sneha's excitement.
"Yup...he is really good looking and seems sorted in life."
"Alright...just be yourself. That's the best part about you..."

Sneha often wondered if she had given Vishnu the kind of attention he deserved. She received plenty from him. He always called her a "sounding board". It was clear she was important to him. But she never took him seriously beyond a point.

She forced her thoughts back to the guy sitting in front of her. The guy's baritone deserved all the attention. As did his subtle sense of humour and elegance.

"You could've tried being an RJ....your voice seems made for it.." she complimented, without hesitation. Her being confidently upfront impressed a lot of men - including Vishnu. Only, Vishnu didn't know how to handle it. He would end up tongue tied when she complimented him- not knowing how to react. Somehow, he was much better on messages.

"How's it going?" Vishnu texted the very moment, almost on queue.
"It's going great....TTYL"
"Awesome!" Vishnu responded.
She knew Vishnu would be eagerly waiting for a moment-by-moment account of her date.

At the end of the date, Sneha felt she had an excellent time. The guy seemed a gentleman. There was a calm confidence about him. Beyond his looks and the voice, he really seemed to want to listen to her. The icing on the cake was his parting words : "I'd love to meet you again - just let me know". He seemed rather sure of her. Sneha felt cheerfully nervous. It had been a couple of years since she had felt that way after meeting a guy.

                                                                     ****************

"I said no" Sneha texted Vishnu, after a couple of days.
"No??! Are you out of your mind? After everything you told me about him?" Vishnu responded.
"It didn't make sense...after deep thought"
"I'm clueless..." said Vishnu.
"Why would you be clueless? ;)"

The text unsettled Vishnu. He scrolled through their chat of the last few months and thought of all their conversations. Sneha seemed to listen to him, understand him and help him take decisions. Some of their chats had been a little edgy...but neither of them set much store by them. "We are poles apart" was a statement they concurred with. Yet somehow, there had always been a soundless whisper in some corner of his mind: "What if....?"  Sneha was pretty, attractive, grounded and knew Vishnu well. "What if...?"

"Let's meet...tomorrow evening..?" he texted and waited with bated breath.

Sneha was pleasantly surprised to see the message. She had never known Vishnu to be so vocal about planning a meeting. They met when they had common errands or occasionally watched a movie or play together. Of late, the honesty with which Vishnu shared everything happening in his life had slowly made Sneha pay him more attention. He didn't know much about her. And there were times when Sneha felt she could open up to him a lot more - he deserved to know her better.
"What if ....? she thought. Vishnu was smart, honest and simple - and gave her more attention than any other guy she knew. "What if....?"

"Okay! ;)"  she responded. It was a leap of faith.

                                                                     *****************

For the first time, Vishnu consciously dressed to impress Sneha. Not that he knew much about her tastes. He thought about their chats and conversations - and those times when she'd remarked that he looked good. He settled on a round collared half sleeved T-Shirt. He knew he didn't have a lot of muscle in his arms - but then he wanted to appear confident about how he looked. He knew that if anything, Sneha admired confidence.

Sneha was there at the rendezvous before him. She knew being on time was something Vishnu valued. He clung on to some of these slightly out-dated values - but that was what made him the nice guy he was.

Vishnu walked to where she was standing - smiling. There was something about him that evening, that she had not noticed in years. For someone who used to dress formally even to a movie, he seemed relaxed in his Tee. There was that air of casual confidence which she had never associated with him. May be she would have to discover this side to Vishnu - Sneha felt excited about it.

"Hello Sneha" he greeted her with a handshake - that was the norm between them. As they walked, side by side, to the restaurant, Vishnu felt they were walking closer to each other, than usual. He would generally be the one moving away in those circumstances, but today he didn't. Her perfume blended beautifully with the evening breeze, as they made small talk - each trying to sound more cheerful than usual.

As they sat down in the restaurant, Sneha unfurled her hair and it slid gracefully to her side. Vishnu was in awe. He had never noticed her that way. He kept looking at her. For a couple of seconds too long. She probably observed that.
"Should we order something?" Sneha asked him, a hint of a mischievous smile playing on her lips.
"Yes...let's do that.."Vishnu drifted back into the conversation.

The conversation ebbed and flowed and both of them looked for cues and openings to talk about what was uppermost in their mind. Neither of them wanted to be the first one to speak out - yet both were aware that this was probably their only window of opportunity. May be they wouldn't invest so much effort and emotions a second time.

"How do you want to live your life, Sneha?" Vishnu ventured cautiously. They had never spoken about their dreams and aspirations seriously. He had never been this direct with her. But it was now or never. For once, he felt she was as involved in the conversation.

"I believe in adventure, Vishnu. To be able to visit places. To have new experiences all the time. I don't want to be rich to do that. My lifestyle is simple enough....I backpacked through Cambodia once...and I felt so much freedom doing it. That's life..."

Vishnu was taken aback by the response. She always worked so hard at office. The recognition, the money, the growth - he had always felt she was career oriented, like he was.

"And all the top performer awards that you get in office...?"  he asked, trying to sound not too concerned.

"It's livelihood...my boy! I know where I want to go...but I'm figuring how to get there. Till then, I'll work hard to do justice to what gives me the money."

This put things in new perspective for Vishnu. She was beautiful, confident and grounded. But would she ever settle down...like he wanted to? Get married and then settle down to a beautiful routine that screams of happiness and contentment? The little joys of spending evenings together and weekends together. The couple goals of growing old together with a house they could call home. Vishnu came from a family where his father had worked three decades to have a shot at these goals. And these goals meant the world to him.

"So where does a relationship fit in your life?" he asked, the tremors in his voice articulating his internal confusion.

"Well...I'd prefer someone who's earning well right now....together, we'll save up over the next ten years probably....and then we take off...'Nomads for Life!' " Sneha said, dreamy for the first time that evening.

"I'm clueless..." Vishnu fumbled. "Why did you reject the other guy then...?" He could sense the tenuous connection they'd built in the earlier part of the evening melting under the pressure of their different worlds.

"Well, he wanted a peaceful domestic life. I mean...he is doing so well professionally now, he could retire in five years. But then, he wants to be a CEO...and I'm expected to run the show at home...nah! That's too much ambition for my liking"  Her hair was in a bun now, Vishnu noticed. The Sneha he always knew would soon be back.

"Hey...do you feel like ordering dessert? Vishnu suggested, hoping they could prolong the conversation and find something in common between their respective ideas of life.

"You know...I don't feel like it right now. Is it ok?" It hadn't taken much effort for Sneha to work out that certain things would always remain unsaid between them. Both of them knew why they were there that evening. And both of them now realised it would be a date that never was.

They walked out of the restaurant. They walked the usual distance apart. Still making small talk - only it wasn't punctuated with that extra effort to impress each other. Vishnu now seemed a lot more like the Vishnu she knew - simple and honest. Yet someone who could be more sure of himself.  Vishnu didn't find her perfume as enrapturing as earlier in the evening. Probably the air was still. Probably she was too confident for him.

This was an evening that they would never speak about - atleast in the near future. May be they'd look back at it years later....and even laugh about it. But right now, there was some work to be done to shove this into the bottom of the trunk of their mutual memories.

Vishnu reached home. Sneha's message popped as soon as he hooked on to the Wi-Fi.
"Thanks for the dinner!" she said.
"Thanks for the company!" Vishnu responded.
"Did you reach home safe?" he asked, as was their ritual.
" I always do...don't I? ;)" Sneha winked. Vishnu's heart skipped a beat. Some things would never change!

Adventures in Arranged Matrimony: Hunt - Or be Hunted!!

Adventures in Arranged Matrimony: Hunt - Or be Hunted!!

"Priyanka, Anusha, Chaitra and 236 others are waiting for you...."the notification read. I was thrilled. If just uploading an incomplete profile would put me in touch with so many potential suitors, I would find the "Right One" in a couple of weeks. I quickly opened an other tab on the browser that said "Popular honeymoon destinations in Asia"

                                                            **********************
When you don't fall in love at the right time - or rather-get someone to fall in love with you at the right time, the inevitability of arranged marriage looms large. Add to that a conspiracy from the stars (read horoscopes), a script dictated by religion and caste, and (over) enthusiastic participation from a wide circle of relatives - the stage is set for drama like never before. Only, it is happening in your own life.

I still remember the day my Father brought a hundred page note book and religiously wrote Lord Ganesha's name on the first page. "Ensure that you find a girl before this book runs out..." was his first instruction. It was then that I realized that this notebook would be his database of all profiles that were referred to us. I almost ventured to suggest that he start an Excel, but held myself back, as I'd be the one eventually maintaining it if it were to transpire to reality.

Our next task was to bring out the model in me. This involved transformations of humongous proportions: from the hygienic to the well-groomed, from the posture-less to the photogenic and from the presentable to the polished. "Please try to put on some weight" seemed to be the universal suggestion right from the distant aunt whom I got to know existed when we started bride-hunting, to the gym instructor, who suddenly seemed to take more interest in my marriage because the membership renewal was due.
"I'll make you ready for the big day Saar" he used to say with a wink every time, in broken English. And as though spurred on, I would do a couple more routines that day, than the usual.

                                                         *************************
"Let's head to the Bureau" declared Father one Saturday afternoon. We were nearing the end of an intense referral phase - with my matrimonial Resume being floated discerningly in the close circle for potential matches. This had not resulted in much tangible progress - apart from tempering our expectations and anxiety levels. My Father for one, understood that a blue tick on WhatsApp doesn't mean that his son's marriage is a foregone conclusion. I realised that wearing dark shades instead of power spectacles in a photograph, doesn't exactly improve my appeal. And most importantly, Mother started appreciating that a girl looking super beautiful in a photograph may look totally different in reality.

Once planetary alignments, Facebook profiles and MBA colleges ensured that we exhausted all possible leads in the close circle, Father decided that we had to cast the net wider. Or rather, I had to be displayed more publicly as an eligible bachelor. It was then that we zeroed in on the Bureau.
Apparently, lot of prospective grooms and brides had found the "One" in the Bureau. It had an excellent database of suitors (I was wondering if it was better than that of Father's) and provided opportunities for parents to network. It was a niche in itself because, it was still only offline with a fledgling presence online - and yet managed to attract people from all over the state.

It was a Sunday when we first visited the Bureau. Through sustained effort, I'd managed to gain a kilo plus three hundred grams - which was visible as a paunch, thanks to corporate life.(The gym instructor was insisting that I'd gained weight - where, was a different matter altogether). My Mother fussed that I wear formals;wearing a Tee would mean exposing my slender arms and bony neck. What if the girls' parents thought I was undernourished? Father complained that lack of a stubble meant I looked 24 and not 29. (This was definitely not under my control). "Behave yourself, cut your sarcasm" was the instruction I received from them as we got down from the auto. The Auto Driver's "All The Best" seemed more a smirk than a wish, as we entered the doors of the Bureau. I asked Mother if I should prostrate for a couple of minutes before entering - for good luck- but she dismissed my earnest question as sarcasm.

Ever since we started discussing the Bureau, I'd developed visions of it in my head. I'd imagined myself entering the Bureau with two jasmine garlands - one around my neck and the other one in my hand, for the girl I felt was my best match. Girls would line up on either side, waiting for me to make my choice. And the one I chose to garland would walk away with me, while her parents' eyes brimmed with tears of joy. In an alternate version, girls were waiting for me with jasmine garlands in their hands. The next moment there were multiple garlands around my neck, and I'd to figure who I needed to accept. It was my parents' eyes that were glistening with tears of happiness now.

The reality turned out to be totally different. The Bureau was one square hall, lined with benches and some chairs for courtesy. Tubelights lined the walls and a couple of fans cooled a rather tense and serious atmosphere. Anxious parents pored over files that contained data of prospective brides and grooms. Each of them, had made their own database ( I could now appreciate Father), which was in a different stage of maturity.

Clearly, there was a distinction even among the parents' journeys of finding brides and grooms for their sons and daughters. There were parents who had just managed to convince their sons to start thinking about marriage and had rushed to the Bureau with horoscopes and photographs with a plan to find the right match the same day. There were parents for whom the novelty of the process had worn off and who were "going through the inevitable motions" before the perfect match came along. And then there were the frustrated ones - who had passed through the first two stages - who now just hoped that the process would end. There were the quiet ones. And some of them who were boisterous. Some one of them even acknowledged that they should have allowed their children to find the right match themselves.  I was amused at this late realization and silently wondered if the same thought was crossing my parents' minds too. Well, I guess it was too early in the day for that!

My parents were presently in the over enthusiastic segment. Father opened his precious database and wrote the date with the brand new Parker he had bought for the purpose. Mother switched over to her officious mode as she wore her reading glasses. I was soon doing the dual role of a bridegroom and a clerk. My job was to run to the store room, grab a file full of brides-to-be, hand it over to my parents. Father matched the fundamentals of the horoscopes, Mother scrutinized the profile and passed it to me for  final vetting. Nevertheless, it was cursory. If the profile passed Father's checks and Mother's eyes - we would proceed "to discuss at Home."

                                                              *************************

I came back home from Office the next evening to a call centre. Father's database was spread wide open on the table. He was on one side of the living room, his customary coffee in one hand and his mobile in the other. "Hello...is this Mr..? We came across your daughter's profile at the Bureau. My son's name is Alok....." he went on. And at the end of the conversation, he would write a response across the profile in his database. There were different updates - ranging from "Accepted - to send profile" "Horoscopes don't match" to "Discuss with Alok". There were a couple of cryptic encircled and crossed out profiles as well.

Mother was on her phone as well, working on the other half of the list - typically where the point of contact was the lady of the house. She would start with an ice-breaker before pitching me more formally. She would even go on to describe what my hobbies were and what I did on weekends. I was almost sure her pitch was much better than mine to any prospective match. At the end of her conversation, she reached out to Father's database. But her evaluation and update were more analytical and critical than Father's. "Tone was cordial. Seemed interested". "Down to Earth. Need to progress this further". "Great background. Alok would be interested"

Both my parents were cold calling prospects!! And their cold calling had sincerity and earnestness that I never managed to imbibe in my share of cold calling as a sales guy.The final straw was my Brother. He was busy WhatsApping my profile to parents of prospects that Father and Mother had already spoken to.

Arranged Matrimony was staring at me in the face. To find someone - I always believed - had to be my objective. The reality was turning out to be different. My family had made it their purpose to find me someone. I was used to calling it social pressure - a blind obsession. But what I was now seeing was genuine concern to help me take the next big step in life. I saw the same energy, enthusiasm and determination that I had seen in them during multiple milestone moments in my life earlier.

I looked at them with pride and emotion. The lens of irony and sarcasm through which I had viewed the proceedings till now was fast melting in the fervor to do something to help my family see this moment through successfully - without much effort. Should I grab the sacred database and start dialing a few numbers myself? Or should I call the Matrimony website to extend my Premium subscription? Or should I vow that I would visit Lord Ganesha the moment an alliance was struck?

My train of thoughts was broken by loud shouts and noise from a couple of Hi-Fives. "It's more than a blue tick, Brother" Akshay was telling me. "They want to meet us next Sunday!"

Was I Hunting.......Or being Hunted?

Adventures in Arranged Matrimony: The "AM Date"

Adventures in Arranged Matrimony: The "AM Date"

Hi….I slept over this…and I don’t think we can make this work in the long run. All the best to you!” I pondered for a good ten seconds if I had to insert a smiley. Decided against it and hit the send button. She was online. And within a few seconds, the dreaded blue tick appeared. “Sure. All the best to you too!” she replied. I enlarged her DP for one last time, before deleting the number forever.
                                           …………………………………………………..

So….how is that you’re looking for AM?” She asked, as we settled down across a table in a café.
AM?” I asked, not quite aware.
I’m tired of calling itArranged Marriage”. So for me, it’s AM now!” she said casually. Wow! I understood I was in for a grinding “AM date”.

Not that I’d had many. And quite honestly, I wouldn’t prefer many. Like every guy trying to getting hitched through arranged marriage (yeah…quite a paradoxical phrase), I wished the war ended before I became a veteran. Some said it was basically “selling” yourself to the girl and her family - not that I was great at sales either.

It’s an arrangement” she broke my chain of thoughts. “You look at if you and the girl are compatible on paper...and then proceed to meet a couple of times…..and may be take a while to decide…” Her hair was shorter than what I had seen - or imagined that I’d seen- on her matrimonial profile. I somehow preferred girls with longish hair.

You could say “you and I” right….let’s make it more personal?” I said, trying subtly to flirt a little. I clearly wasn’t sitting there to “analyse” compatibility. You either felt a spark or didn’t. We stared at each other mutely for a couple of seconds. And then the inevitable happened. The waiter arrived. It’s amazing how Providence decides the course of action sometimes - or all the time.

The bigger problem I had to grapple now was what I could order. Being a filter coffee person, I was sitting here in a Café, choosing between Cappuccino and Latte. Not that I’d never been to a café. But I’d always had wiser friends to guide me. And I had to make sure I was sufficiently knowledgeable and a tad sophisticated this time around! I had a cursory glance at the Menu and ordered what I thought was vaguely familiar. She knew her choice pretty well. And thankfully, we agreed on fries - regular.

Once the waiter was out of earshot, we resumed our conversation again. The most interesting part of these conversations is that they are never direct. You are expected to talk about hundreds of random things and then magically - somewhere there is intuition that this might work. “I forgot my dabba today” she said, with a smile. Finally something personal. I felt better. “That has happened to me too…”.  “So don’t mind if eat a better share of those fries” she continued.  The conversation meandered along for a while. The agenda was pushed to the background and small talk took front stage. The waiter returned with our coffee and fries and arranged them on the table.  Both of us were momentarily distracted. It was evident that we were finding the coffee and fries more interesting.

I know we are discussing arranged marriage. But I’d prefer to fall for the girl even in this case. I guess it is much better that way.” I said - voicing my views firmly for the first time that evening.
Then why didn’t you love someone?” She asked me immediately, in between dipping the fries in the ketchup. It seemed the most obvious question. Yet answers weren’t obvious. “The tricky part is to get someone to love you back.” I wanted to say, but held back, considering it was our first conversation. I remained silent. The silence seemed to egg her on, surprisingly. “Ahaa….so you did love someone. Who was she? Where did you meet her?”  She asked, with almost a mischievous smile. The conversation was really heading along an unplanned trajectory.

I let out a false laugh and brushed it off. It was time for a break again. “So how is it you never take the Metro?.....” I asked her, attempting a distraction that thankfully worked.  I could sense myself perspiring a little. It was like being part of a sales call where the customer asks exactly those questions you don’t have an answer to!

We were sitting there for more than half hour now. I was still figuring how to frame my innumerable questions and expectations in a way that didn’t sound desperate and immature. On the contrary, she seemed quite well versed about how to steer these conversations. We continue to live in times where caste and horoscope still figure as the primary qualification criteria in arranged marriages, before the parents get into discussing the more practical aspects. With umpteen filters already in place, it is hard enough, getting a prospect to reach the meeting stage. Once this stage is reached, there is immense pressure to actually make things work and close the deal - with almost everybody in the social circle looking to get you married every alternate day. Yet here I was, jittery and confused, as she sat focused on her Cappuccino and the fries that seemed to be running out. I played my next card.

Why did you choose to meet me in the first place?” I asked. This is my standard question to find out what a girl likes about me. It gives me a chance to know something positive about me and boosts my ego, obviously. Everyone likes to hear good things about themselves. “Well…you approached our family. And when I saw your profile…I thought I could just meet and figure things out! Had no expectations really.”

This was entirely new perspective to me. When the conversation started, I was in the frame of mind that this would be one of the most important conversations of my life. I was excited at the prospect of meeting her. I was looking forward to this conversation for about a week. Yet, here she was - approaching the same meeting with overwhelming practicality.

About an hour into the date, we realized the conversation was running out of steam. We had emptied the fries long time ago, so there was nothing to distract us either. I’m sure we had our initial hunches if things would work out. The waiter must have noticed our silence too. He wandered close to our table one time too many to make sure we asked for the bill.

My confusions started again. Do I be chivalrous and offer to pay the entire bill? Or did women prefer to split the bill these days? These little things were tougher than the conversation itself. When she offered to split, I readily agreed.

We decided to walk together to the Metro Station.  During the walk, I decided to give it a shot. I told her the reason I had wanted to meet her was because of the way she had phrased her bio on the matrimony site. That I had really liked the way she said that she preferred someone who treats everyone equally irrespective of their background. “I really resonate with your opinion” I blurted.

She stopped. Looked at me for a couple of seconds with that mischievous smile I got earlier in the Café. “You clearly are a nube to this process, aren’t you?”  We continued walking. And just before we parted ways at the station she said “For all your emphasis on falling for a girl, just know that every marriage heads south after a few years!” the smile and that sense of reality never leaving her face. Clearly, we had different trains to catch!

The Last(ing) Conversation

The Last(ing) Conversation

I looked into her eyes....like I'd never looked before...and knowing completely that I may not look into them again, in the same way. The silence was uncomfortable. A lot of words were to be said. A lot of words could've been said. But then, we chose them carefully. Each word could make a world of difference. What if we never met again and this last conversation was not the memory we intended to make?

We were fully aware of the circumstances. We always had to part. Though not aloud, we had imagined this moment for months now. Now we wondered how we could actually do it, without hurting and hating each other. May be that way was easier. You could hate someone and forget them. But how could you love someone and forget them? I always wondered if the "out of sight is out of mind" adage is true. But how would she be of out sight....when the last image I saw every night before falling asleep was her eyes....and those strands of hair that fell in front of her left eye....and the way she gracefully hid them back behind her ears...till they fell in front of her eyes again....

The strands fell in front of her eyes again. It broke my chain of thoughts. She hid it again and I knew the silence was getting more and more uncomfortable.

"So...you're leaving in the morning?" I knew everything right from the train number, to the seat she would occupy to the departure time. We had discussed this atleast ten times. I still asked.
" I have to...." she replied. Like she had no choice. She probably had none. But would she have taken it, if she had a choice? I always wondered.
"What if the train to your town is permanently cancelled?" I said. There was a pause. My heart beat fast as I waited for her reply.
" I would've to take a bus" she replied...and burst out laughing. This was part of why I liked her so much. The ability to make light of a serious situation. But somehow, it got on my nerves that evening. May be she noticed it too. She placed her hand on mine..looked into my eyes and said
"You know I've got no choice." This always calmed me down. I was sometimes scared no one would understand me like she did.

Somehow, the way she reconciled to the fact that we could never be together was alarming. It was as though I was already a part of her past. I would probably take months to heal. And she would always occupy a precious little corner in my heart. Would it be the same for her as well? Would she remember me?

"Would you even remember me, after a few years?" I asked. Insecurity was creeping. And the funny part was I felt insecure that I wouldn't be a part of her memories...let alone her life.
"I've got something for you...." she said. It was obviously a topic-changing tactic. I mean, she always did that when we headed the emotional way. I felt weird. I was always one for emotional, dreamy conversations. She was always the more practical. May be that's why we worked...may be that's why we didn't work.

She handed me a gift. It was wrapped in golden yellow. I smiled. It was her first gift...and probably the last one. Every time we met after a gap, I always asked her..."What have you got for me?"And she always used to say "I'm here in person...what more do you want?"
"So...is this because..you won't be there in person anymore?" I said sadly. I cursed this mode of mine at times. But I just couldn't let go so easily. She knew it too.

"Why don't you understand? It's just not possible. I need to go." Her eyes moistened slightly. Somehow, it made me happy. Like I meant something to her...if not everything. "Let's talk something normal. Okay? Normal. When're you leaving for home?"she was good at this.

I must say, I always lacked the power or will...to actually get angry or argue with her. I had tried to hate her many times, knowing that it was the only way I could move on. But no...it was -to put it in her words - just not possible.

Our conversation meandered around some mundane stuff for some more time. I just wanted to spend as much time as possible with her. The moon had risen fully. There was no one walking around anymore. After a while, we suddenly realised the silence around us. It made both of us conscious.

"I think I must go." she said. "Yes you should" I parroted. We got up from those stone steps. I stood close to her....as close as I was permitted. I looked into her eyes for a whole minute. "You're beautiful" I said. "Thank you", she said and looked down. It was getting a little heavy for both of us. But there was no escaping it.

That strand of hair fell in front of her eyes again. I don't know what made me do it.....but I took it, and placed it behind her ears..its rightful place. She looked at me.I didn't know if she was hurt....or if she was blushing.
"I'm sorry." I said. "But...I wanted to do that...atleast once in my life". There was silence. She recovered...and said "I'd better get going. Need to do some last minute packing" I had to recover too. We shook hands, like professionals, and said "Good-Bye" to each other.

I took a few steps. And turned to look back at her. She was about to disappear behind a bend, when I shouted "Hey....come here. I have a plan."
"What is it..? I need to rush...."

"It's like this...we both live for an other 50 years say. 2065. Then we die. We are born again in 2089. Let's come back here in 2113. Atleast that time..would you agree to be my companion for life in 2115?" My heart was pounding again. Here I was, a stupid romantic, trying to reserve a slot for a next time that nobody knows if it exists! And my expectation was as realistic as though I was talking about next year. We looked at each other for a few seconds.

In the end, she only said "You are mad!"

Like I said, I was the eternal dreamer....and she was downright practical.

But somehow, even in the moonlight, I could notice she was blushing. And after a couple of minutes of mute staring and smiling, I could swear she took a step towards me.....

Was that moment advanced by a 100 years, all of a sudden

Letters,Calls,Messages.....and Longing

          Letters, Calls, Messages.......and Longing

"When do we realize we actually like someone? Is it when we are with them day after day, spending millions of moments together....???Or is it during that single moment of separation, which seems drawn out to eternity? Or is it at the end of that eternity when we actually realize what we missed?"

Subramanian tried to recollect her face. He was glad he could remember her smile. But he didn't have the time to notice much else. The girl had been ushered in for a minute to serve coffee to the prospective groom's party, and was quickly sent back inside.

The radio at Muttiah's saloon blared a Kannada duet. Subramanian couldn't understand it. But could connect with the tune and the possibility of  lasting romance it presented. Soon after the haircut, he went to the local post-office.

                                                .............................................................

Chandru first met her at a music concert. Classical music had brought the two of them together. She played the Tamburi for her Guru. Fortunately for Chandru, she wasn't talented enough to sing in a concert herself
(Chandru would've never thought he stood a chance, if it had been the case). They had shared a silent coffee in a canteen outside the concert hall, after Chandru caught her attention by attending 15 concerts of her Guru. At the end of the coffee, she wrote her 7 digit phone number of a small piece of paper and hurriedly thrust it in his hand.

                                                  .............................................................

Procuring her mobile number was easy enough for Rahul. He knew girls these days don't actually mind sharing their personal contact. The difficult part was getting her to constantly be in touch with him and not let her drift. He could sense he had too many competitors that way. Facebook helped. And so did Whatsapp. But everyone else had access to it too! He had to create points of difference.

                                                   .............................................................

Subramanian had struck a deal with the post master at the girl's village. For 2 rupees a week, his letters would bypass the girl's father and directly reach the girl. He had sent the first letter hoping against hope that the girl would respond. In the wait that followed, he had nightmares that the girl would actually report his covert advances to her father. Or the post master would actually double-cross him. But neither happened. A week later, Subramanian received her reply. Subramanian now had more than her smile to remember- her handwriting. In a burst of inspiration, he tried to imagine her face, given her handwriting. After a whole night of thought, he was none the wiser. He had to wait for the next 6 months, when the marriage would actually happen.

                                                   .............................................................

Chandru's first few calls to her were centred around her Guru. He found that it was the only subject that actually opened her up. Any digression and she would promptly hang up within a few moments of it. Her Guru is this; her Guru is that; he gave his first concert when he was just seven.......At the end of 3 months, Chandru could've written a biography of that great man. Thankfully, somewhere down the line, the topics started to get a little more diverse. They would discuss her routine. Again, amazingly, it was centred around her Guru. Chandru had to reconcile to the fact that her Guru- in person or spirit-would be a part of their life, if at all it was destined to be "their" life, at some point of time in the future.

                                                  .............................................................

Rahul felt he was making his presence felt. He had pursued his agenda diligently for more than 3 weeks now. Sending her "good-morning" messages; making sure he was the one who wished her "good-night" before she actually slept each night. Asking her umpteen doubts(ofcourse some of them had to be fake!!) about classes, assignments and what not! 10 days earlier, he had graduated to complimenting her.
"You seem to know everything" was the first one.
"You are such a brain!" was the second one.
After a string of such seemingly mundane ones, he finally had got more personal two days earlier.
"You look beautiful when you let your hair loose" he texted and waited with bated breath for a reply.
" :) :)" said a message from the other end. A perfectly diplomatic way of ending the chat.

                                                 .............................................................

Subramanian's letters were getting better and bolder by the day. The formality in tone was lost after the first couple of letters. The inhibitions five-six letters later. Subramanian would get playful. He would compare her eyes to stars(though he never remembered having seen them) and pick a few lines out of the latest Hindi songs and dedicate it to her. She would respond in kind, throwing in a few metaphors and similes in her own way. He would always persuade her to call him by his name. She would always refuse, stating that if a wife called her husband by her name, his lifespan would reduce. Subramanian liked it when she said that. He felt there was someone who actually cared for him, apart from his parents. Yet he felt this liking was somehow more pleasant.

Four months into the letter-exchange, his feelings for her reached a fever pitch. He was tired of trying to imagine her face, her features. He wanted to see her...atleast in a photograph. Photograph....that was it!
He dashed a letter off to her. He asked for a photograph with her next letter. And started waiting for it.

                                                 .............................................................

Chandru called her as usual. She wouldn't pick. Twenty rings later, the call got disconnected. He dialled again. The result was the same. She had never done this before. A few minutes later, he dialled her number again. There was no answer. A few hours later, he tried again. An unfamiliar voice answered it. Chandru was taken aback. Never had someone else responded to his call. Somehow, it had always been her. He put the receiver back. He started wondering what was wrong.

                                                 .............................................................

The messages had become a lot more personal of late. Rahul felt he was on the right track. Messages, instant replies, "sorry"s when the replies were a little late than usual- these had become the norm. Likes, dislikes, preferences were shared without inhibition. They spent a lot of time together during the day. And once they got back home, spent a lot of time calling and texting each other. The initial attempt by Rahul had been a little forced. But then, the whole thing seemed so natural now. Rahul would reach out to her on instinct. She would reach out to Rahul.
After a couple of months, Rahul decided something's got to give. He was tired of having to hold back his feelings for her, now that they spent such a lot of time together. The moment seemed to have arrived. On one of their usual night time chats, he suddenly popped the question:
"Would you go out with me?" and waited, his heart beating heavily.

                                                  .............................................................

15 days passed. There was no reply from her. Subramanian was confused. Had he committed a mistake by asking her for a photograph? Had the letter somehow reached her father, who had decided to break the alliance? Or was the girl herself angry? You never knew with conservative girls. You never knew what made them angry. You never knew what made them withdraw into a cocoon, from which extricating them was near impossible. Subramanian was nervous. Had one small act of his ruined his prospective marriage?
The silence was deafening.

                                                 .............................................................

Two days passed. She hadn't called Chandru. The norm was a call per day. He had called her yesterday. She hadn't picked. And she hadn't called herself today. Chandru was worried. Had the unfamiliar voice reported it to her parents? Or worse her Guru? That would be the end of the world. He received 4 calls that day. Everytime, he felt the elation when the phone rang. And the sinking feeling when the voice at the other end was not hers. What was this unexpected wedge that threatened to separate them??

                                                 .............................................................

She hadn't messaged for 15 minutes now. Rahul was cursing himself. Why did he have to ask her out when everything was going so well? They were enjoying each other's company to the core. He had her attention and to an extent, affection. Rahul now felt there was no need to ask her out. Should he message her and apologise? Or should he wait? Would his question be the end of it? His mind was into all sorts of calculations. His eyes and heart were waiting for that one message......

                                                 .............................................................

Subramanian received a letter. It bore the post mark of her village. He opened it and could see her handwriting. He rushed to read the reply.

"Hope you're doing well. Sorry for the delay in reply. The photo I had was one from school. Didn't want to send that. Had to arrange for a saree. Had to book a time in the studio to get myself photographed. All without Appa getting to know about it. Post master uncle helped a lot. Hope you like the photo. The colour of the saree.........." the letter went on. Subramanian opened the cover enclosed with the letter. He would never miss her anymore.

The phone started ringing. Chandru's excitement was a little abated now. He had resigned himself to the fact he had lost her. He was thrilled when he heard her voice from the other end.

"I had to go to my Guru's village for two days. It was at very short notice. Please excuse me."

Chandru felt relief wash all over him. He had been dejected, angry and worried moments ago.

"That's ok. Make sure you tell me next time!" he said with a cheery voice, before they changed topics.

Rahul was still cursing himself, when he finally received a reply 20 minutes later. His phone vibrated, indicating a notification.
The text was from her ofcourse. He expected the worst. The message only said

"Dyu want me to let my hair loose or tie it up, tomorrow?"

"When do we realize we actually like someone? Is it when we are with them day after day, spending millions of moments together....???Or is it during that single moment of separation, which seems drawn out to eternity? Or is it at the end of that eternity when we actually realize what we missed?"
